April 11 @ 7:00 pm

Amaro Freitas plays the piano as if every note carries a trace of Recife. The rhythms of his hometown – characterized by maracatu, frevo and baião – lie at the heart of an expression that both reflects and challenges Brazil’s musical traditions. His music takes its pulse from the streets of Northeast Brazil and shapes itself into a jazz that is raw, spiritual and clearly rooted in today’s Brazil.

“You can quite easily forget that the piano is a percussion instrument — but when you hear the playing of Amaro Freitas, it suddenly becomes very, very clear.”

– Cerys Matthews (BBC Radio 6)

From growing up in Recife’s poorer neighborhoods to international stages, Freitas has worked purposefully with a clear vision. Breakthrough albums Sangue Negro (2016) and Rasif (2018) established him as a distinctive voice in new Brazilian jazz, before Sankofa (2021) addressed forgotten stories and philosophies in black Brazilian culture. In 2025, he won a Latin Grammy for a collaboration with Liniker – a recognition that further solidified his position in the Brazilian music field.
