We are proud to have the NGO, Karanba as a BNCC member, and to share with you some highlights from when they received a visit from the Norwegian Prime Minister last November.
Karanba was founded in 2006 by former Norwegian footballer Tommy Nilsen and is a social and sporting project that offers free football training, guidance and workshops for children and young people of both sexes.
Currently, 700 children participate in the activities, 44 percent of whom are girls.
Since its inception, more than 11,000 children and young people have visited Karanba’s courts, more than 1,500 have received guidance and training, and 535 have completed their vocational education. The project also offers guidance in connection with entrance exams for higher education.

During the G20 participation of the Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Gahar Støre in Rio de Janeiro in November of last year, Karanba had the honour of receiving a visit from the Prime Minister, who also participated in a football tournament on the beach Leme/Copacabana.
The Prime Minister met with participants, who shared their personal stories of how Karanba has changed their lives. Støre emphasized the importance of sport as a tool for social change:
“Sport opens doors and creates opportunities for young people, not only in Brazil, but throughout the world. When we invest in children and young people, we invest in the future,” said the Prime Minister.

Karanba participant Marcos Victor Santana Lima (16) shared his experiences: “Karanba has been a dream come true. I have had the opportunity to take courses in IT, English and even as a junior firefighter. The project has opened doors for me and broadened my horizons,” he said.
Another participant, Alessa da Silva Oliveira (17), shared her story: “Karanba has taught me a lot, both on and off the field. The project has given me strong bonds with people who have become like family to me,” she said.
Tommy Nilsen explains that the project combines football and education to give children from São Gonçalo better prospects: “Karanba has also changed my life. I have had the opportunity to give hope to children who grow up in difficult circumstances. My main goal is to prepare them for life, and give them the conditions to have a better life.

The Prime Minister concluded by highlighting the great diversity in Karanba:
“I am particularly pleased to see that almost half of the participants are girls. Promoting equal opportunities in sport is key to building a more inclusive society,” he concluded.
“Playing football together brings joy, mastery and a sense of belonging. It was great fun to watch the match here in Rio and talk to the players. Sport can open doors and create opportunities for young people, not only in Brazil, but all over the world,” says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Brazil is known as one of the world’s greatest football nations. On one of the world’s most famous beaches and to great applause from the audience, Støre emphasized that football is an important tool for inclusion and social change. The event brought together Brazilian and Norwegian children and young people, and representatives of Norwegian companies that support Karanba.
